Custom stainless steel stirring rods are precision components inside analytical instruments, laboratory automation systems and liquid handling equipment. This article explains, from a precision machining perspective, how to specify a custom rod correctly and how to verify quality on delivery.
Before sending a drawing, make sure these dimensions are clearly marked:
β Rod diameter and tolerance (for example, 3 mm ± 0.01 mm)
β Overall length and the length of the working head
β Diameter and position of the mounting hole or connection end
β Any taper, groove, slot or flat surface requirements
Acceptable formats: PDF, CAD (with GD&T), STEP/IGES, or a physical sample for measurement.
Always confirm whether the tolerance applies to the rod body only or also to the working head and connection end - this affects both cost and lead time.
For liquid handling applications, surface finish is not about appearance - it is about function. A rougher surface traps liquid and increases carry-over and contamination between samples.

Custom finish:other roughness values can be specified on request
Inspection:surface roughness verified with a profilometer; visual inspection for scratches, pits and burrs
When a PTFE (Teflon) coating is applied, remember that it adds thickness. Film thickness ranges from 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm, depending on the coating type:
For parts with tight mating fits, the coating thickness must be considered in the base dimension calculation, or the coated part may not fit the mating sleeve.
1. Measure rod diameter and length against the drawing
2. Check straightness by rolling the rod on a flat surface or using a dial indicator
3. Inspect the polished surface for scratches, pits or uneven areas
4. Verify coating uniformity and film thickness if PTFE coated
5. Test-fit with the mating component (sleeve or mounting end)
1. Send your drawing or sample with material and finish requirements
2. Receive quotation and DFM review within 1-2 working days
3. Approve a sample first (samples are charged at cost, shipping at buyer's expense)
4. Batch production starts after sample confirmation
